Mona A. Zawaideh, MD
Mona A. Zawaideh, MD, has joined University Physicians Healthcare and the faculty of The University of Arizona Department of Pediatrics. Dr. Zawaideh is the only physician in the country who is board-eligible in both pediatric nephrology and endocrinology, according to the American Board of Pediatrics.

"We are thrilled that Dr. Zawaideh has joined our faculty. She brings unique expertise in two subspecialties that are desperately needed in the Southwest: nephrology and endocrinology," says Fayez K. Ghishan, MD, head of the UA Department of Pediatrics. "Children with diabetes-related kidney problems can now see a pediatrician trained specifically to help them."

Dr. Zawaideh recently completed a dual fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis in pediatric endocrinology and pediatric nephrology. She earned her MD from Jordan University of Science and Technology, and completed her pediatric residency at The University of Arizona Health Sciences Center.

In addition to clinical service, Dr. Zawaideh will conduct research with the Steele Children's Research Center at the UA. Her main areas of research is diabetic nephropathy-kidney disease resulting from diabetes. "More research in this area is needed because diabetes is the most common cause of kidney failure in the United States and accounts for more than one-third of all patients who are on dialysis," says Dr. Zawaideh.
