June 26, 2006
From: Vicki B. Gaubeca, (520) 626-7229

The longest-running rural health conference in the nation, held here in Arizona, will focus this year on the State's unique rural and border health challenges. Registration is now open for the 33rd Annual Rural Health Conference: Beyond Borders: Collaborating for Health in Rural Arizona, set for Wednesday through Friday, July 19-21, at the Bisbee High School, 675 School Terrace Road, Bisbee, Ariz.-one of the "coolest" places for a conference in Southern Arizona in July.

The conference will present innovative approaches to promoting healthy rural communities and to addressing Arizona's frontline rural health challenges. The conference program will provide an in-depth look at how health systems in rural communities are challenged by barriers and borders and will explore successful programs and collaborative models to overcome these.

The conference, sponsored by the Rural Health Office at The University of Arizona Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health, the Arizona Rural Health Association, and numerous other local Cochise County governmental, health care and community health agencies, will offer a line up of internationally recognized speakers exploring immigration, human rights and public health issues in the region. In addition, there will be opportunity to attend a variety of interesting and informational workshops, including a tour of the Mexican Health Care System in Naco, Sonora, as well as to network with health professionals from the state of Arizona, view poster sessions, and meet in-state and out-of-state vendors in the health industry.

Conference attendees will include representatives from rural, border, binational and tribal health agencies throughout Arizona, including practitioners, public health planners, leaders, epidemiologists, health educators, administrators, behavioral health specialists, nutritionists, tribal representatives, researchers, academicians and students. Participants, and their families, will be able to enjoy Bisbee's charming, historical and relatively cooler surroundings, with numerous events and activities available.

Registration fee includes a one-year membership to the Arizona Rural Health Association (AzRHA). Group and same-day registration is available. Please visit the Rural Health Office online at www.rho.arizona.edu/Events/Conference/2006Schedule.htm to download the conference brochure and to register online.
