Arizona College of Public Health Announces 'Engaging Our Communities:'
A Public Health Seminar Series

The Mel and Enid Zuckerman Arizona College of Public Health has announced the Engaging Our Communities Public Health Seminar Series that brings together experts from around Arizona and the nation to discuss the most salient public health issues. Presentations focus on local, state, national or global public health topics, including those from other disciplines that may affect public health.

The free seminars are set for every first, third and fifth (if applicable) Tuesday of the month, starting Sept. 16, in Kiewit Auditorium in the Arizona Cancer Center, 1515 N. Campbell, noon to 1 p.m. The seminar schedule is as follows:

  • Tuesday, Sept. 16 Lessons Learned and Future Challenges for Bioterrorism and Public Health Emergency Preparedness. Presenters: Marilyn Atha, Bioterrorism Coordinator for Pima County, Ted Tong, Professor and Associate Dean, UA College of Pharmacy, Les Caid, Deputy Chief, Tucson Fire Department and Tucson Metropolitan Medical Response System (MMRS).
  • Tuesday, Sept. 30 Community-Based Chronic Disease Prevention: Why Promotoras are Successful. Presenters: Maria Lourdes Fernandez, Promotora, Douglas, Ariz., Jennifer Hunter, Arizona College of Public Health.
  • Tuesday, Oct. 7 Connection of Stress and Trauma to Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome. Presenter: Ann Bullock, MD, Cherokee Nation.
  • Tuesday, Oct. 21 Real World Research: The Role of Community-Based Evaluation in a Diabetes Outreach and Education Model Program. Presenter: Maia Ingram, Arizona College of Public Health.
  • Tuesday, Nov. 4 Listening to Our Community: Participatory Research in the Hualapai Community. Presenters: Thomas Siyuja, Helen Watahomigie, Sandra Irwin, all from the Hualapai Health Department, and Nicky-Teufel Shone, Arizona College of Public Health.
  • Tuesday, Nov. 18 Changes in Cancer Patterns and Implications for American Indians/Alaskan Natives. Presenters: Kathryn Coe, Arizona College of Public Health and Arizona Cancer Center, Agnes Attakai, Arizona Cancer Center, Charlton Wilson, MD, Associate Director, Phoenix Indian Medical Center
  • Tuesday, Dec. 2 Project EXPORT--Promoting Health Equity in Arizona One Community at a Time. Presenters: Dean G. Marie Swanson, Brenda Manuelito, Arizona College of Public Health.
  • Tuesday, Dec. 16 Planning for the Rural Health Workforce. Presenter: Alison Hughes, Rural Health Office, Arizona College of Public Health.

Presentations are teleconferenced to the Arizona Health Sciences Center Phoenix Campus and Northern Arizona University's College of Health Professions. In addition, they are broadcast through the Arizona Telemedicine Program and Tucson` cable television-on Cox Cable Channel 76 and Comcast (People' Choice) Channel 48.
