Southern Arizona's First Specialty-trained Pediatric Cardiac Surgeon joins University Physicians and The University of Arizona Department of Pediatrics

Kimberly Gandy, MD, PhD will join the pediatric cardiology team at University Physicians Healthcare, and the faculty with The University of Arizona Departments of Surgery and Pediatrics in October 2005. In addition, Dr. Gandy will hold a research appointment at the Steele Children's Research Center.

Dr. Gandy is trained in Pediatric Cardiac Surgery and Transplantation and brings a wealth of experience in taking care of children with heart defects. She completed her medical degree at Northwestern University and doctorate at Stanford University. Her Cardiothoracic Surgery training was completed at Duke University. Dr. Gandy did an additional two years of sub-specialty training in Pediatric Cardiac Surgery under the direction of the acclaimed children's heart surgeon, Dr. Frank Hanley, at Stanford University. Her research on heart muscle cell development is funded by the American Heart Association.

Dr. Gandy is the first specialty-trained Pediatric Cardiac surgeon in Southern Arizona, and she joins Jack Copeland, MD-Professor and Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery at The University of Arizona College of Medicine, and co-director of the UA Sarver Heart Center-and his outstanding Cardiothoracic Surgery team.

With her training background and the support of Dr. Copeland, we expect that Dr. Gandy will develop into a leader in the fields of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery and Transplant medicine," says Ric Samson, MD, Section Chief of Pediatric Cardiology at The University of Arizona.
